(more…) april 24, 2018 versatile doesn’t mean safe dom opinion 2 comments it’s no secret that cool clothes can cost a lot of money. so if you’re into fashion, and you’re not a rapper or an heiress or a foreign exchange student, you need to be selective with what cool shit you do and do not drop a lot of money on. it’s natural, then, to gravitate towards items that you’ll get the most mileage out of – stuff that’s wearable for different occasions, and works with as many other pieces as possible. in other words, pieces which are versatile . the thing is, oftentimes pieces manage to be versatile by virtue of being safe; the term “versatile basics” is practically a meme with how often the two words are used together. black jeans, black derbies, white sneakers, white tees, grey trousers, navy blazers, olive bombers… you get it. while all of these pieces are certainly versatile, they are also all undeniably safe. a picture is often painted of there being a sort of spectrum with the foregoing sort of versatile basics at one end, and outlandish statement pieces at the other. the more versatile a piece is, it would seem, the less “interesting” it can be. this presents a dilemma when buying expensive pieces – on the one hand, if you’re dropping a lot of cash, then you want to be able to wear the piece a lot, but equally, it seems silly to drop a load of cash on a piece that could be indistinguishable from something sold at cos or uniqlo. it’s a compromise between a piece being both interesting enough and wearable enough to justify the cost. i think that viewpoint is flawed. while i agree that the versatile basics have their place, i do not believe that being basic is the only way to be versatile. (more…) july 17, 2017 inspo: lazy luxury dom inspiration 2 comments there’s a style i’ve been feeling a lot recently that i thought was worth a ramble. the name i tend to use for it is lazy luxury; i’ve also heard the term casually wealthy used. it’s all about dressing in super elegant, luxurious garments, but with a disheveled, lazy, comfortable vibe. picture the kind of shit you’d wear if you were a romanticised caricature of a manhattan playboy: so rich that everything you own exudes luxury, but equally so rich that you don’t need to impress anyone, so you make no effort to be “presentable”. (more…) november 20, 2016 october outfits: winter is coming dom outfits 2 comments yo so i’ve decided to start doing monthly roundups of my favourite fits from the past month, starting with october. and yeah i’m well aware that we’re like two thirds of the way through november but my online poker addiction real life has kept me busy so far this month so i’m a little late. i’ll try harder next month. anyway , october featured me copping two new footwear grails, so most of these fits feature them. obviously winter is fast approaching, which you can see in the gradually increasing coziness levels as we go through the month. with all that said, here’s the album: this fit was for a costume party at my university, where you had to dress as if you'd picked a different degree. i decided my alternative subject would have been fashion, and so dressed as myself a fashion victim. not gonna pretend i'm not gonna rock this exact fit again soon tho. patrik ervell jacket, asos shirt, kooples jeans, and slp wyatts. this was one of those fits that i kind of threw together and then ended up liking way more than i expected. i just realised i hadn't worn this shirt/tee combo before despite olive and black being the sex, so tried it out and loved it. john elliott shirt, allsaints linen tee, acne thins, slp wyatts. this fit got a lot of love on instagram and various fashion forums, which honestly kind of surprised me because i felt like it was quite formulaic as far as "slp shearling fits" go. that said, i tried to put something of my own mark on it by using lots of different brown tones, and adding excessive jewellery. vintage shearling, allsaints shirt, acne thins, slp wyatts. this fit might actually be my favourite of the month, and definitely my favourite featuring my new balmain hightops. this whole fit was very balmain inspired; i think the scarf worked really well at setting a very luxe vibe (and it was cozy af). allsaints scarf and tee, schott jacket, acne thins, balmain hightops. october of course ends on the one day i could get away with this fit: halloween! i was very tenuously dressed as some kind of sexy vampire, but honestly i'd actually just tried on this blazer without a shirt a few days before and was like "yep this looks sick", so just found an excuse to wear it. vintage velvet jacket, acne thins, slp jodhpurs. september 19, 2016 summer pickups: shirts for days dom pickups 1 comment as a break from the pseudointellectual rambles that are the mainstay of this blog, i’m gonna start doing some more shit about my personal wardrobe and style. kicking this new era off is the this “haul” post about all the shit i picked up this summer. as indicated by the title, most of them are shirts. at the start of summer, for someone who runs a fashion blog, i actually owned relatively few shirts. among those i did own, they were all long-sleeved, and largely either completely plain and boring (nobody has ever been excited by a plain white oxford shirt) or very loud (leopard and aztec prints). so my main aims going into sale season were to get some short-sleeve action on the go to help cope with the heat of summer, as well as filling out the “interestingness midzone”. anyway, here’s a slideshow of the shit i bought. allsaints linen tee : i wanted a black tee that wasn't the same old black boring cotton, so this line
